Eisenhower Expressway Improvement Project Receives Federal Approval

On July 28, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) announced that plans to modernize the Eisenhower Expressway (Interstate 290) have received federal approval.

The project is estimated to cost approximately $2.7 billion, and will include managed lanes and transit improvements. Funding has not yet been finalized for the design and construction of the plans, and all methods are being considered, including public-private partnerships.

Because of the lack of funding, there is not currently a timeline to begin construction, but IDOT is working to identify funding for the project. The Eisenhower Expressway was constructed in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s, and that original structure still comprises the majority of the road. It has doubled its original maximum capacity of 100,000 cars per day.
