$3 billion clean energy plant approved for Chicago’s south side

In the waning days of the lame-duck legislative session, members of the Illinois House and Senate approved a plan to construct Leucadia’s $3 billion coal gasification plant in south Chicago.

The plant, to be constructed on the site of the former Republic Steel facility, would use coal along with oil refinery byproducts to create synthetic natural gas. The majority of emissions from the plant would be contained, preventing pollution that is typical with many types of energy production facilities.

While the construction date has not yet been determined, the plant would come online in 2017, and would create 1,100 construction jobs and 200 permanent jobs.
