CTA Blue Line picks up $120 million in federal funds for rehabilitation

Anthony Foxx, the United States Secretary of Transportation, has announced an additional infusion of $120 million in federal funds for massive rehabilitation of the O’Hare Branch of the Chicago Transit Authority’s Blue Line.

This additional funding brings the total funding level to nearly a half billion dollars for the upgrades, which began last year and will continue through 2018. The project includes upgrades of several stations as well as subway, elevated, and road-level tracks. In addition to these federal dollars, state and local funds are being combined to fund these improvements.

“This is a significant investment from the federal government,” said Local 150 President-Business Manager James M. Sweeney. “State and local governments rely on federal dollars to perform large scale improvements like the ones on the Blue Line, and we are counting on Congress to increase the amount of federal funds available to modernize our infrastructure and put people to work in good paying jobs.”
