Local 150 Backs Plan for Replacement of Savanna-Sabula Bridge

Local 150 Representative Mark Szula spoke Wednesday at a meeting regarding the replacement of the Savanna-Sabula Bridge.  The bridge carries US 52 over the Mississippi River connecting the city of Savanna, Illinois with the island city of Sabula, Iowa.  The original bridge, built back in 1932, sees roughly 2000 commuters daily and has seen numerous repairs over the years.  In an inspection in 2012, it had been deemed “structurally deficient.”

The three year project would include the demolition of the current bridge as well as the construction of a new one.  An ecological study will be conducted in the Spring of 2015 and will most likely be included in the June letting.  The current bridge is part of the National Register of Historic Places.
