In a landslide result, nearly 80 percent of voters approved the Illinois Safe Roads Amendment on Election Day. This will amend Illinois’ Constitution to ensure that transportation revenue, including motor fuel tax and vehicle registration, cannot be spent for purposes other transportation.

This effort was spearheaded by Local 150 and partners in labor, business, agriculture and commerce. Over the last ten years, more than $6 billion has been swept out of transportation funds in Illinois. Committing these dollars to transportation will create more jobs without any new taxes.

“Voters’ decisive passage of the Safe Roads Amendment is a victory for taxpayers. We will be able to invest more toward our transportation infrastructure without new taxes,” said Local 150 President-Business Manager James Sweeney.

“Drivers in Illinois have been promised that the taxes we already pay at the pump go toward maintaining the roads and bridges we drive on, yet for so many years, these dollars have been swept away for other uses.”

“From this day forward, Illinois motorists can be confident that the taxes we pay toward infrastructure will be spent on infrastructure. This amendment just makes sense, and the margin of victory is telling of the support this issue received all across Illinois.”
