$2.5 Billion Route 53 Extension Draws Massive Public Support

A poll and report released this morning by the Illinois Economic Policy Institute indicate that the vast majority of Lake County supports the extension of Route 53 and Route 120, a major construction project that has been discussed for more than 50 years.

66 percent of Lake County residents who were polled supported the construction, while only 18 were opposed. Construction is estimated at between $2.3-2.7 billion.

The Illinois Tollway will consider later this year whether to fully fund the Environmental Impact Study (EIS), a necessary step forward in identifying potential routes and designs. This poll was released to show the public demand for this project and the report details the need for modern transportation infrastructure in Lake County, where population growth has outpaced the vehicle capacity for decades.

Local 150 has long been a vocal advocate for the extension of Routes 53 and 120, and we will work to support this project and encourage the Tollway to fund and conduct the EIS as soon as possible.
