On July 27th, the 2018 Local 150 Food Bank Scholarship Program awarded more than $150,000 in scholarships to members’ children at the General Membership Meeting. Started in 2012, the Scholarship Program is an extension of the Local 150 Food Bank’s assistance to members during the economic downturn of 2008.

 

Today, the program takes in contributions from the union and employers, awards the following scholarships:

  • 8 four-year scholarships valued at $3,000 per year
  • 4 two-year scholarships valued at $2,500 per year
  • 4 two-year mechanic/technical scholarships valued at $5,000 per year

Winners are selected by an independent panel of judges led by Professor Bob Bruno of the University of Illinois’ Labor Education Program. Congratulations to all of the following winners:

Four-Year Scholarship Winners

  • Emily Euker: Daughter of James Euker, Marengo, IL. Attending Montana State University for a degree in Fish and Wildlife Ecology and Management
  • Daniela Marquez: Daughter of Javier Marquez, Chicago, IL. Attending the University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign to pursue a degree in Engineering
  • Bridget Giblin: Daughter of Brendan Giblin, Oak Forest, IL. Attending North Central College to pursue a degree in Biology
  • Danielle Hill: Daughter of Daniel Hill, Hobart, IL. Attending Indiana University Northwest to pursue a degree in Criminal Justice
  • Abigail Stepien: Daughter of Jeffrey Stepien, New Lenox, IL. Attending Bradley University to pursue a Nursing degree
  • Sean McCandless: Son of Michael McCandless. Gurnee, IL. Attending University of Iowa to pursue a degree in Biomedical Engineering
  • Joyanna Osborne: Daughter of Gary Osborne. St. Charles, IL. Attending Grand Valley State University to pursue a degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography
  • Cassandra Weyker: Daughter of Keith Weyker, Frankfort, IL. Attending Anderson University to pursue a Nursing degree

  • Jessica Melnik: Daughter of James Melnik, Oak Lawn, IL. Attending Moraine Valley Community College to pursue a degree in Art and later become an elementary school teacher
  • Rayann Gilchrist: Daughter of James Gilchrist, Somonauk, IL. Attending Waubonsee Community College to pursue a Nursing degree
  • Joseph Buckley: Son of Gregory Buckley, Herscher, IL. Attending Joliet Junior College
  • Katelyn Ross: Daughter of Jonathan Ross, Princeton, IL. Attending the Illinois Valley Community College

Two-Year Mechanic/Tech Scholarships

  • Michael Whiteside: Son of Michael Whiteside, Lake Station, IN. Attending Vincennes University to pursue a degree in advanced manufacturing automation technology
  • Cade Simon: Son of Shawn Simon. Attending Kishwaukee College to pursue a diesel associate degree
  • Derek Cosman: Son of Timothy Cosman, Marengo, IL. Attending Kishwaukee College to pursue a diesel associate degree
  • Andrew Gillan: Son of Dennis Gillan, Amboy, IL. Attending Illinois Central College to pursue an associates degree in applied science and become a heavy equipment technician

Congratulations to the 2018 Food Bank scholarship recipients! The Local 150 Food Bank Trust will begin receiving applications again in October.  Members who have dependents interested in pursuing a career in the trades should apply for the 2-year mechanic tech scholarship.
