At the General Membership Meeting on July 28th, James M. Sweeney presented scholarships to the recipients of the 2017 Local 150 Food Bank Scholarship Program.

Joanna Dillon won the Jim Sieracki Memorial Scholarship Award. JoAnna is the daughter of Local 150 member Thomas Dillon. JoAnna graduated from Warren High School in Apple River, Illinois. While in high school, JoAnna was in a number of student organizations such as Student Council, Student Council Treasurer, National Honor Society, Speech team, and played volleyball all four years. JoAnna will be attending Loras College in the fall to pursue a degree in Criminal Justice and Psychology.

Bailey Green is the daughter of Local 150 member Kermit Green II. Bailey graduated from Decatur High School in Decatur, Michigan. While in high school, Bailey was active in Student Government, National Honor Society, as Marching Band as the drum major and section leader. Bailey will be attending Grand Valley State University in the fall to pursue a degree in Biology.

Kylee Martin is the daughter of member Scott Hepner. Kylee attended Kouts High School in Kouts, Indiana where she participated in Student Council, was the President of the National Honor Society and served as Captain of the Robotics Club. Kylee will be attending Purdue University majoring in Biology for Pre-Occupational Therapy.

Alivia Longley is the daughter of member, Larry Longley. Alivia attended Penn High School in Mishawaka, Indiana where she played volleyball and participated in three mission trips to Honduras and Nicaragua. Alivia also volunteered in her church helping kids.  Alivia will be attending the University of Southern Indiana in the fall to pursue a Nursing degree.

Mary McAleer is the daughter of member Neil McAleer. Mary attended Prospect High School in Mount Prospect, Illinois where she was a member of the Principal’s Advisory Group  and served as President of the Student Advisory Council. Mary was also on her high school swim team all four years and was selected to be a LINK leader her senior year, a program aimed at helping freshman assimilate into high school. Mary will be attending the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities in the fall to pursue a Biology and Environmental Science degree.

Michael Hertel is the son of member Robert Hertel Jr. Michael attended Indiana Trail High School and Academy in Kenosha, Wisconsin. While in high school, Michael was Vice President of the Key Club, Treasurer of the Key Club, and was on the National Honor Society. In addition, Michael was also a member of his high school’s Science Olympiad team. Michael will be attending the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in the fall.

Grace Mercer is the daughter of member John Mercer. Grace attended Riverdale High School in Port Bryon, Illinois where she was a member of the Student Council, served as Vice President of her class and National Honor Society. Grace will be attending Iowa State University in the fall to pursue a degree in Biology.

Maxx Carpenter is the son of member Cary Carpenter. Maxx attended Dundee-Crown High School in Carpentersville, Illinois. While in high school, Maxx was in the National Honor Society, served as a church youth leader and a peer mentor. Maxx also was on the track and field team all four years of high school. Maxx will be attending Augustana College in the fall.

In addition to the 4-year scholarships, the program also includes 2-year scholarships for accredited junior and community colleges.

Rachel Carroll is the daughter of Local 150 member, David Carroll. Rachel attended Pontiac Township High School in Pontiac, Illinois. Rachel was in the National Honor Society, Spanish Club, and was an Illinois State Scholar. Rachel will be attending Heartland Community College in the fall to pursue a degree in Speech Pathology.

Alyssa Cuellar is the daughter of member Juan Cuellar. Alyssa attended Hampshire High School in Hampshire, Illinois where she was in the National Honor Society, Feminism club, and was a church volunteer. Alyssa will be attending Elgin Community College in the fall.

Caelan Moreno is the daughter of member Robert Moreno. Caelan attended Woodstock North High School in Woodstock, Illinois. Caelan was an Illinois State Scholar, participated in the German Club ands was on the high honor roll all four years of high school. Caelan will be attending McHenry Community College in the fall.

Danielle Rubo is the daughter of member, Tracy Rubo. Danielle attended Lakes Community High School in Lake Villa, Illinois where she was involved in cheer leading, soccer, and helped manage a football team. Danielle will be attending the College of Lake County in the fall. 

The first award of the two-year Mechanic Tech Scholarship went to Nicholas Baker. Nicholas Baker is the son of member Richard Baker. Nicholas attended Montini Catholic High School in Lombard, Illinois where he played football. Nicholas will be attending Universal Technical Institute in Addison, Illinois and hopes to pursue a career as an automotive technician.

The Scholarship Program will open once again in November, and applications will be due in mid-February. More information can be found at www.FoodBank150.com.
