Late last week, Local 150 Financial Secretary David Fagan announced the establishment of the Lunchpail Republicans PAC in Indiana, which will raise money to fight legislation like “right to work” and support candidates who run against legislators who support this kind of legislation.
“It is bewildering to see Republican legislators supporting a bill that forces a private business to work for free,” said President-Business Manager James M. Sweeney. “For the most part, Republicans in Indiana have gone too far to the right, and I applaud an effort to support a shift back to moderate Republicans who don’t bring harm to their states’ workers.”
“Right to work” legislation makes it illegal to force workers to pay dues, but union contracts require that these same workers be represented just the same as regular dues-paying members. This law is being pushed as “worker freedom,” but it is nothing more than union-busting.
