The O’Hare 21 project is a testament to Chicago’s commitment to creating a state-of-the-art airport that will serve as a dynamic international gateway. Aimed at transforming O’Hare International Airport from curb to gate, this ambitious endeavor will cement its status as a premier global hub, catering to the ever-evolving needs of travelers well into the 21st century and beyond.

One of the pivotal components of this transformation is the development of a sophisticated trunk stormwater conveyance system, a project that involves the tireless efforts of the skilled members of Local 150. Since November 2023, these dedicated professionals have been hard at work on this crucial infrastructure, which is integral to the overall O’Hare 21 modernization plan.

At the heart of the airfield, crews are constructing a 1.5-mile-long stormwater tunnel. This tunnel is designed to reroute water flows from the Central Basin to the South Basin, a necessary step to facilitate the construction of new satellite terminals. The Central Basin is scheduled to be backfilled this spring, marking a significant milestone in the project’s timeline.

https://local150.org/wp-admin/post-new.php#The task is no small feat; it involves using a massive 400-foot-long boring machine to carve out a 17-foot diameter tunnel situated approximately 50 feet below the surface. Remarkably, this tunnel lies beneath two active runways, showcasing the precision and expertise required to carry out such a complex task without disrupting airport operations.

For the members of Local 150, this project not only represents an engineering challenge but also offers numerous opportunities for growth and development. Their hard work and dedication are crucial to the success of the O’Hare 21 project, ensuring that O’Hare International Airport stands ready to welcome the world with open arms.

Recently, President-Business Manager Jim Sweeney, Assistant to the President-Business Manager Marty Durkan, and Business Agent Tom Rottman visited members to see the progress being made on the stormwater tunnel.

Check out the photos and video from the site visit.

Thanks to all the Local 150 members working hard. Stay tuned for more updates on the progress of this transformative endeavor, as we continue to witness the evolution of one of the world’s most important aviation hubs.
